I first studied this wetland in Pocahontas State Park from the limb of a tree. I was reading a biography of John Muir at the time and was inspired to get a different perspective from my plein air study.

I was able to observe the marsh for hours, painting precariously, trying to stay as still as possible. It was an exercise not only in observation from life, but observation from the perspective of the birds nested above, from the bugs and the lichen and the squirrels.

That original plein air study (shown below) isn’t my favorite in terms of capturing the likeness, but allowed me to explore a new way of thinking about painting.

My biggest take away? Climb more trees.
