“The Confluence”

Oil on Canvas with Gold Leaf

5’x3’

2022

The confluence of the Little Colorado River with the Colorado river is one of the most undeniably sacred places I’ve had the honor of experiencing. The milky blue waters of the LCR feel like a mirage, an impossible oasis in the desert heat, and a constant reminder of the fragility of these wild and precious places. Constantly threatened by greedy development proposals, this liminal space has served as the barrier between worlds since time immemorial for the Hopi people.

This painting is the biggest commission I’ve ever taken on and was a true honor to not only be trusted with a project this ambitious, but to have so much time to meditate on the significance of the Little Colorado. Thank you to photographer, Blake McCord (@blakemccordphoto) for graciously allowing me to use his photo as reference.
