Painting is not only the art of observation, but an ever evolving practice in presence.

This painting was based off of a plein air excursion I took to Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Marble Canyon, Arizona.

I had been wanting to paint this area plein air for some time now, and I was well rewarded for my efforts.

Aside from the personal significance of this area to me (being so close to Lee’s Ferry), the Vermillion cliffs are utterly enchanting.

Desert scrub, vast sky, wind, sand, and stories told in stone remind me of my finitude in the best possible way. This land demands listening. We are all as brief as the shadows the clouds cast on thousands of years of sediment.
