Introducing the “Sedimental Series,” literal and metaphorical pieces of some of my favorite landscapes.

Putting a piece of the landscape into every painting.

Literally.

The Sedimental Series has been one of the most fun side projects I’ve taken on in a while. To connect more literally with the landscapes I paint, I’ve been making my own pigments from the sites themselves.

So far, I’ve painted with:
• charcoal from Mount Elden
• lava rock from Schultz Peak
• Hermit and Bright Angel Shale from the Grand Canyon
• charred aspen leaves from the Dragon Bravo Fire

The paints are coarse, imperfect, and such a joy to work with. A simple mix of ground pigment and watercolor medium brings the landscape straight into the work.
