This piece was a commission from a former passenger of mine, Michael. It is always special to create work for specific people with whom I’ve shared the “Grand Canyon experience.” Through guiding, I’ve been given the opportunity to connect with total strangers in a way we are rarely afforded in the modern world. Although these connections are often brief, they are deeply meaningful and occasionally transformative.
The stories and perspectives of each participant on a river trip cultivates an entirely unique experience for the individual and for the group. In turn, when commissioned by passengers to interpret scenes or moments from the trip, all of those experiences infuse a painting that is just as ephemeral and distinct as the trip itself.
Michael is a talented photographer, and this commission had the additional element of being created from his distinct creative vision. Not only is this painting based off of a photo that Michael took, but I had so much fun in the ideation process working alongside him to craft a composition and a scene we were both equally excited about. Thank you again, Michael!
